Employee Relations 101 from the HR Experts at Century II
According to a recent study from BlessingWhite, an international HR consulting firm, approximately 2 out of 3 employees are not fully engaged with their jobs, or aren't "contributing fully to the success of the organization and find great satisfaction with their work." (Click here to read more about this study.)
This can lead to several problems for employers, the most obvious of which is turnover; however, studies show that low employee morale can also lead to declining stock prices and increasing production costs (SHRM.org).
So what are employees looking for? According to this article from the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), there are four elements of an employee with high morale:
1. The need to identify with the company they work for.
2. They have what they feel is necessary to be successful.
3. Being rewarded for success.
4. Having positive and productive relationships with coworkers.
Many employers believe that by increasing bonuses, incentives, or having "fun events" like taking employees to lunch, they will boost employee morale and thereby lower turnover margins. And although these incentives will improve the attitudes of most employees (and are always greatly appreciated by employees), it will not solve the problem of disengaged workers.
Lower morale is often a long-term problem that cannot be cured with a short-term solution. Terri Levine at Sideroad.com offers 11 tips to boost employee morale at your company.
